Chairman Garry Mounsey has paid tribute to the woman he calls 'Mrs Workington Town' as she retired last weekend.

The club's chief executive June Kennedy presided over her last match on Sunday as Workington took on Whitehaven at Derwent Park.

And after 44 years with Workington Town, hers will be hard shoes to fill.

"She's like a female Tom Mitchell and has been at the helm of the club for so many years," said Mounsey.

"June has come across a lot of people in her time, seen different players, coaches and directors.

"She has been a phenomenal servant to Workington Town and in reality she is Mrs Workington Town.

"She has sewn shorts together and done everything from washing dishes to painting.

"Anything that has needed done at the club she has held her hand up to do it, no questions asked."

The club was quick to honour June, who got involved with the club through husband John, who was then a volunteer at the club.

From the early days she was roped in to repair and wash the squad's shirts before moving into the office and from there she never looked back.

She will always be remembered at the club as they have moved to rename their boardroom in her honour and given her a life membership.

"I would imagine there were times she could have walked away but she stayed and to be involved for 44 years is a marvellous achievement," added Mounsey.

"She has so much knowledge and says she will always be there in an advisory capacity, always at the end of a phone."

June's dedication to the club was recognised back in 2011 when she was added to the RFL Roll of Honour.

And at the annual RL awards dinner on Monday night, her service and retirement were once again recognised by the wider rugby league community.

And more than that Mounsey admitted she was also a close friend, who had helped him out during his 15 years at the club.

"She is a very dear friend. We have built up a good relationship over the 15 years I've been there and she had helped me tremendously from when I came as scholarship coach and manager through to where I am today.

"She has looked after me and I now class her as a very dear friend."

June received her life membership at half time in Sunday's West Cumbrian derby when a host of past players returned to form a guard of honour for her to come onto the field.
