Workington Town are in talks with two Super League clubs over potential pre-season friendlies.

Currently Town have just one planned clash, the Ike Southward Memorial Trophy against Whitehaven on February 5 at Derwent Park.

But they are hopeful they will get another one or two run-outs before the League One season kicks in.

Director of rugby Les Ashe said: "We are in negotiations with a couple of Super League sides, so we will see what comes of that.

"But we would hope to get a couple more friendlies planned in."

The club is also still looking to further bolster the squad before the start of the season.

They are currently in negotiations with four players and are keeping a sharp eye out for more that will fit the bill.

Ashe added: "If the right player comes along at the right time and that is right for the team, then we are interested.

"We are not overly concerned at the size of the squad yet, we are still looking for the right players and we are talking to plenty of people.

"We are in deep negotiations with four potential targets at the moment and we will see what happens there."

The club has also had several amateurs down at training sessions to give them a taste of the professional atmosphere.

Ashe said it was a good way of lads seeing what is involved if they turn professional and said it was good for both parties.

"We have had eight local amateurs down with us, all either Cumbria or BARLA representatives," he explained.

"They are all a good standard of player and we have also had some of last year's Cumbria Storm players down as well to give them a feel of what it is like training as a professional.

"It works well for everybody and training has been going well, everyone is really positive."

Workington Town is holding a race night on Saturday, as part of their fundraising activities for the forthcoming season.

The event will be held in the Gus Risman bar at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. All are welcome.
