Gordon Maudling has handed Workington Town a boost by returning from injury ahead of a run of seven games in as many weeks.

Maudling, who excited fans with a dream debut against Hemel Stags last month before being sidelined with a shoulder injury, is available for selection for Sunday’s game against Doncaster at Derwent Park, kick-off 3pm.

Town coach Dave Clark admitted the stop-start nature of the season so far has helped get players like Maudling fit but hopes the coming busy period will help build consistency.

“Gordon has had a shoulder injury, so he’s had about three or four weeks off,” he said.

“To have him back available for selection is great because he played really well in those two games.

“The rest of the squad is pretty healthy.

“We’ve had some injuries, so it probably went in our favour to have a week off here and there but now we’ve got seven games back-to-back which is good to get some consistency."

“I’m confident every week that we can compete and get the result that we need," Clark added.

“The games we’ve lost have been against sides where we’ve given away a try or two.

“It’s a bit of an arm wrestle at times where we’ve got to get back into a game after a mistake. And, if we can get that mentality right, we are capable.

“We’ve got to make sure that, when we get close, we finish teams off.”

Doncaster sit fourth in the League One table, three places above Town, and Clark expects them to make life difficult for his side, although he is taking hope from their performance in defeat against Hunslet.

Clark said: “They’ve been doing quite well this year, so again, it’s another challenge for us to compete against a side that’s probably a contender for that second promotion spot.

“It’s going to be tough defensively because they’ve got a really good left edge and they ask some questions of you.

“From our point view, we got a lot of positives out of the Hunslet game, especially the character of the side.

“We had three concussions and two players couldn’t return after the first 20 minutes, so to have two players on the bench for 60 minutes of the game and come back showed the determination and team spirit, even though we lost in the end.

“We could have easily thrown the towel in.”
