Workington Town club captain Jason Mossop will be keeping a close eye on Oxford’s leading try-scorer Casey Canterbury when the two sides meet today.

Town are going to Oxford in the hope of getting their first league points of the season but Mossop said they have to be wary.

And Canterbury, with hat-tricks in his last two outings, is one player that Mossop is keen for them to close down.

“We have looked into him a bit. Myself and Neil Frazer were talking about him and we said he sounds like a good player,” said Mossop.

“He has been getting a lot of man-of-the-match awards.

“I like to know who we are going up against and we are going to watch a video on Saturday.

“I saw their result last week and they won comfortably, so they can score a lot of points.

“We can’t go down there expecting it to be an easy ride. We have to give them some respect.”

The centre, who has just returned from a six-month lay off due to injury, is keen to get Town’s season up and running at Oxford.

“It was definitely good to get back,” he admitted. “Last week was my first game since September when I got my injury.

“It was nice to get out there and be involved with the team and hopefully this weekend we can go to Oxford and get our first league win.”

Mossop admitted the only way they were gong to pick up wins was to learn from the game at Newcastle, tighten up on discipline and cut our errors.

“We’ve spoken about the Newcastle game and we have to be harsher on ourselves,” he said.

“It is not just the penalties it was the handling errors as well.

“Discipline and errors cost us on the day so we have to make it personal as we can’t afford to do that again.

“If you give any team more ball and allow them into your half, it spells trouble.

“Newcastle have recruited well this year and they were a strong side and they capitalised on the field possession that we gave them.”
