Generous Workington Town star Jason Mossop is hoping to use his newly-awarded testimonial to boost local charities.

Mossop, who has just signed a new deal to keep him at Workington in 2017, is appealing to charities or individuals to come forward and tell him how he can help.

The strong-running centre will be running several events throughout 2017, which will support the chosen applicants.

Mossop was awarded the testimonial for his 10 years' service to Workington Town and he said he had met a lot of people along the way and this is his chance to give something back.

He said: "Since I was awarded my testimonial, I have made it clear I want to use this opportunity by helping support different charities.

"Being able to support the chosen charities allows me the chance to give something back into the community and help those who need it.

"Hopefully throughout the year, I can support some amazing people in any way possible and it also allows me to learn more about their charities."

He added: "I'm under no illusion. At the end of the day, whatever I do is nothing in comparison to the work the amazing people carry out on a day-to-day basis for their charities.

"However, if they require some support, hopefully I can help them throughout 2017 and allow them to make a difference."

Mossop and his testimonial committee are hoping to have a number of events with guest speakers, a golf day, plus testimonial games and more to be confirmed.

The Town star proved his generosity earlier this season when he handed over his commemorative shirt for reaching 200 appearances for the club.

Mossop passed it on to one of his fans, youngster Stefan Jones-Bell, who lives in the Swinton area and has Down Syndrome.

Mossop said: “I met Stefan earlier in the season. I met his dad and started talking to him at a game.

“He took some pictures, so I spoke to him about sending them to me and we stayed in touch from there.

“I met Stefan a few times at different games. He is a big Salford fan.”
