Club captain Jason Mossop admitted Workington Town's collapse against Whitehaven on Sunday was one of the worst derby performances he has been a part of.

An edgy first half saw Haven go in 12-6 up at half-time, but Town fell apart in the second half as Dion Aiye and Jessie Joe Parker ran riot.

"They ran away with it and the deserving team won," Mossop said.

"It probably was one of the worst derbies I've been involved in in terms of performance and scoreline in the second half.

"They showed their class.

"Aiye and Parker dictated the game and once they got on a roll we couldn't handle them."

Mossop made no excuses for the dire display but believes the lack of forwards on the Town bench made it difficult for them to keep up with their opponents as the game wore on.

He said: "Going in at half-time, I was pretty happy with the performance.

"We'd bombed a few chances but were competing.

"The second half took its toll with the bench we had.

"It was a big ask for our forwards in the middle having to do the extra work."

The result was a sour note to end a difficult season after relegation to League One last year and Mossop admitted there were positives and negatives to learn from ahead of the next campaign.

"We've regrouped and put a team together which has worked hard," he said.

"On the negative side, it's been disappointing because we could have done a lot better.

"But we've fetched some young lads in like Perry Singleton, who has been outstanding, and Tom Curwen.

"If we can keep the majority of the squad and make a few signings, we can build on it."
