Workington Town stand off Jarrod Sammut says his side remain focused about their job on the pitch as they bid to end their turbulent season on a high.

Town have already been relegated to League One with rivals Whitehaven, although the plight of Sheffield has been a hot topic in West Cumbria.

Both clubs were thrown a lifeline when news broke this week the Yorkshire outfit could fold.

But Sheffield could be saved after Sheffield City Council promised to work with an investor who wants to build a power plant, a new stadium and inject much-needed cash into the club.

Supporters have turned to crowdfunding to try and bring £20,000 in to secure the club's short-term future and the total stood at just over £7,000 at 1pm on Friday afternoon.

The Eagles are likely to go into administration and drop down to a lower division if long-term investment can't be secured.

It is thought only the bottom team from the Championship will go down if Sheffield fold.

On the pitch, Town travel to Halifax on Sunday for their final match of the Super 8s.

Sammut said: "The Sheffield situation is not something I've taken much notice of.

"If we can get a win this week and the worst comes to the worst for Sheffield, we've got a good chance of staying up.

"Regardless of that, we want to finish the season on a good note.

"We're not hanging our hopes on other teams not being able to fulfil their commitments."

Town lost 20-0 at home to the Yorkshire side in February, but ran them close in a brave 36-32 defeat in May.

Karl Olstrom will serve the first match of his six-game suspension, but coach Phil Veivers has no fresh injury worries.

Sammut added: "The Bradford win was a huge morale boost.

"We proved last weekend that if we can turn up with the right attitude and stick to our gameplan we can turn over any team.

"Halifax are a very good outfit and they proved that last year by making it to The Qualifiers.

"They were unlucky and are in the Championship Shield, but they are a quality side.

"We'll have a battle on our hands."

Kick off at The Shay is at 3pm.
