Frustrated Workington Town boss Phil Veivers admitted their draw with Swinton Lions was a point dropped.

Veivers said he believed Town had the opportunity to take the game but they underperformed at crucial times.

In the end both sides took a point away from the 10-10 draw but Town are still firmly rooted to the bottom of the Championship table.

“I was disappointed today,” said Veivers. “The conditions didn’t help but it was the same for both sides and I just thought we underplayed today, we under-performed.

“You can take it as a loss in the situation that we are in.

“I just thought we had enough ball there to win two games and we came up with a lot of poor options.”

Town were winning 10-6 with four minutes left on the clock when Swinton crashed over wide out for a crucial unconverted try to level matters.

Veivers added: “I don’t think it should even have been in our half. We made a break downfield and Jarrod Sammut got held back. A bit of a scuffle erupted and it should have been a penalty. It was as plain as day.

“It can’t be anything else and it wasn’t given. Then they go and four tackles later a chip kick into the corner sees their winger fly on to it and score.

“I want to see the video to see if he got it down but that’s four points, and two points lost off the table.”

Veivers admitted Town were not at their best and worryingly they picked up a couple more knocks in their backs, which were already running thin.

“I thought we were terrible in the first half,” he said. “We went in at 6-6 and we probably should have gone in 8-6 with a penalty coming back off the post.

“The message at half-time was they were a man down and we needed to go right through the middle. We didn’t, we went to the edges.

“I’ll have a look at the video and fingers will be pointed at the people who should have called the plays.

“We got a couple more knocks today, more outside backs than the forwards, so that’s a little bit scary now.”

Town’s next target is Featherstone on Sunday and a big game is needed from Veivers’ depleted ranks.

He added: “We had set ourselves a target that the next game we played we would win and we drew.

“So now the next game is Featherstone and that’s what we concentrate on.

“We’ll dissect this game and go on to that and look for a win there. It’s a massive effort needed from our guys when we go to Featherstone.”
