Two members of the Workington Town board have both announced this morning that they are stepping down.

Vice Chairman Mark Fryer and Associate Director Tony Boyd have 22 years service to the club between them.

Mr Fryer said: "It’s been a difficult decision to make. Being Vice Chair of the club has been the hardest but best thing I’ve ever done.

"The club is part of me and although I’ll be standing down I’ll still be a fan.

"Being a board member is a privilege but I’ve always said that the board is only the custodian of the club. Nobody is bigger than Workington Town and that includes the board and more importantly that includes the players."

He continued: "The club is undergoing a transition after relegation last season and with new directors joining to share the load, I feel it’s the right time to stand down and recharge the batteries."

Mr Fryer said the recent match against Widnes showcased a team who were playing "with pride and enthusiasm".

"The time that you have to put in as a director of a sports club is phenomenal. My family have been massively supportive and I’d like to thank them for putting up my absence most weekends for the last 10 years," he said.

Mr Boyd joined the board in 2007 as a fan actively involved in the Travellers Rest Supporters Club.

He will continue to serve as the treasurer of the club, which has been raising money to support Town for more than 21 years, and maintain his involvement with the Town Vice presidents.

Mr Boyd is credited with project-managing the two World Cup games at Derwent Park in 2013 and the Four Nations match between Scotland and New Zealand in 2016.

He said: "I’m a Town fan first and foremost. I’ve really enjoyed my time at the club but it’s now time for others to take over the significant responsibility of running Workington Town.

"I’d like to thank all of the club staff and volunteers for their assistance and friendship over the last 10 years."

Town chairman Garry Mounsey paid tribute to both men for their service to the club.

"I’m beginning to understand just how much work goes into being a board director," he said, "so to be involved in that capacity for over 10 years each is a magnificent achievement.

"Mark and Tony are Town through and through.

"Their guidance, knowledge and hard work will be missed at the club but we know that they’ll continue to help the club in whatever way they can as fans.

"We wish them both all the very best for the future".
