Hometown boy Tom Walker says Workington Town's players put any troubles well and truly behind them when they beat Dewsbury Rams at the weekend.

Walker said the team really clicked to snatch a dramatic 22-20 victory over their visitors in the last two minutes of the game.

And he says the players have faith that they can claw their way out of the relegation zone from here.

"It was awesome to get the win," said Walker. "From one to 17 all the boys were class. It definitely felt good.

"Over the past week there has been a bit of trouble down at the club but we put it behind us on Sunday and went out and showed we can go up against the big teams and perform.

"To be fair it's been coming all year and we clicked at Sheffield and we clicked again on Sunday.

"There wasn't a point where we thought we were going to be beaten. No-one was in any doubt that we had the ability to win.

"A few of the boys said after the game in the changing room that our season starts here. If we can pick up a couple more wins before the Eights start then I don't see why we can't stay up."

And he admitted he was now looking forward to the derby clash with Whitehaven on Sunday at the Zebra Claims Stadium, ko 3pm.

With both sides fighting to get out of the drop-zone in the Championship, this game could have a huge impact.

Walker said: "It is a derby match but this time the two points are more important than anything else.

"It should be a pretty tasty game as we are both in the same boat.

"Being a home town lad, I grew up watching the derbies so when they come around they are awesome to play in.

"It is personal when you are from Workington, you don't want to be beaten by Whitehaven at the end of the day.

"We have a pretty locally based team which makes it a whole lot better."

Town were missing Oliver Gordon and Perry Whiteley against Dewsbury and Walker said if they can return, the team will be even stronger.

He added: "Ollie has been great all year for us, he has probably been our best forward. Hopefully we can get them back and get out there on Sunday."
