Workington Town have snapped up former Barrow Raiders utility back Joe Hambley.

The 20-year-old, who has won England Academy honours is an ex-Cumbria Storm player and was a key target for his former coach Dave Clark, now at Town.

Hambley turned professional with Barrow and has proved his versatility, playing at centre or on the wing and, with his frame of over 6ft, he has also played in the forward pack when needed.

Town boss Clark said: "Joe is a tall, rangy back who has size, strength and excellent defensive skills. He’ll add pace and power to the team.

"I’ve coached him and for a young lad he is very professional and extremely committed to training.

"He’ll go well for us this year and I’m sure his adaptability and range of skills will be utilised at times through the season."

Town director of rugby, Les Ashe, said Hambley's signing was another indicator of how they were looking to the future and assembling a predominantly Cumbrian team.

He added: "We’re steadily assembling a squad that is looking good, not only for next season, but future seasons as well.

"We are targeting Cumbrian players who we can work with over the long term and Joe is one such player.

"He is a big unit and takes some stopping. I’m looking forward to seeing him score a lot of tries and I know he’ll stop a fair few as well as his defence is a real strong aspect to his game."

Town are holding a fans' forum tonight in the Gus Risman Bar at Derwent Park, starting at 7.30pm.

Directors will talk about their individual roles within the club. Then there will be a question and answer session with the board and the coach and players will attend after training.

Dave Clark will talk about his approach and the 2017 season and then answer fans' questions.
