Workington Town scrum half Jamie Doran says getting the basics right and giving as few penalties away as possible will be the key to Super 8’s success.

Phil Veivers’ side begin their campaign on Sunday, August 7, when they travel to Oldham, a team they beat 32-30 less than a week ago.

Town are not in action this week, but will play four of their seven Championship Shield games in August.

They will host Dewsbury and Whitehaven and will travel to Oldham and Swinton next month before facing Sheffield, Bradford and Halifax in September.

Doran said: “The team are on a roll as we’ve won the last three games, although they’ve been pretty close.

“But I feel like as a team and a group we’re going forward, especially as we’re off the bottom of the league and it gives us confidence going into the Super 8s.”

Town lifted themselves off the bottom of the Championship on the final weekend following their victory over Oldham.

Prior to that fixture they saw off Whitehaven and Dewsbury, meaning they go into the Super 8s with three consecutive wins under their belt.

Despite their impressive form on the pitch, Town are facing a difficult time off it with their financial situation precarious. Doran said: “We need to improve our completion rate, but more importantly we need to stick together.

“Us as players need to put the financial news to the back of our minds and focus on rugby.

“If our team spirit is up there’s no reason why we can’t win a few games and stay up.”
