Assistant coach Jonty Gorley believes Workington Town can take plenty of heart from their display in their 28-18 Super 8s defeat against in-form York.

Tries from Phil Lister, Macauley Davies and Joe Hambley kept the scoreline close and Gorley admitted that there were plenty of positives to take from the performance against a side who became the first to defeat Toronto Wolfpack recently.

“It was encouraging how we played at times,” he said.

“Sometimes, you’ve got to stay in the arm wrestle. We tend to make this game of ours a bit more complex than it should be.

“Chase your kicks and defend well and you will win more often than you lose.

“We mustn’t forget we’ve got a young team and amateurs making what is a big step up.

“We wanted to finish eighth and we did. Now it’s about finishing well and building. This is a three, four or five-year project.

“What we need from them is to just learn from it.”

Town battled and were much more competitive than when they travelled to face the Knights during the regular season but sloppy play and individual errors turned, what could have been a crucial win, into another close defeat.

Gorley said: “They blew us away a bit last time but we competed a bit better at the weekend.

“We were our own worst enemy.

“There was no question they deserved to win the other week but their coach came up to us and said he thought we had them this time.

“The frustrating thing is we can play well, then slip up and it costs us the game.

“It isn’t the same people making the mistakes but it’s the same errors ever week.

“That’s the sort of message the lads were talking about after the game. If we cut these little errors out we win games.”
