Phil Veivers' side were thumped 62-0 at Sheffield Eagles on Sunday to seal their fate.
Veivers declined to comment after the thrashing but his Eagles counterpart said the club must now look to rebuild around its young guns.
Sheffield coach Mark Aston said: “They have some good kids there who are passionate about Workington, and they have to try and rebuild around them and go again.
“It won’t be easy for Workington next season. I’m sure there’s an awful lot of soul searching going on right now.”
After arriving with only three substitutes, there was an air of defeat around Town from the moment they entered the field, and Sheffield capitalised on the obvious vulnerability running in 11 tries.
While Town’s relegation wasn’t just down to their performance in South Yorkshire, they meekly surrendered their second tier status after a lacklustre showing in a game that held such significance for Phil Veivers’ side.
