New Workington Town boss Leon Pryce says he will only use his extensive RL contacts to get the right players for the club.

The former GB international says it is key that any players that are brought in to the club want to play for Workington.

Pryce, who was meeting with the board last night, said: "I think it's important to get the right player.

"It's not just about the contacts, it's getting players who want to play up here.

"Most players are in the Yorkshire/Lancashire area so it's a good two and a half hour drive.

"So, we need to get players who want to play up here and that's very important, having the contacts to get the right people who don't mind the travel and want to impress."

Pryce was also keen to utilise the talent in the county, providing a real mix who will push the club forward.

He added: "I understand the core of the team needs to be Cumbrian, we need to have the fans behind us and have a Cumbrian feel but we also have to be open-minded.

"I'll have a budget to work with and I will talk to the board and see their expectations and I will have my own but there is a long way to go.

"Of course, I want the best. I haven't played at the top for 20 years settling for second best."

The former Bradford and St Helens star said the opportunity to begin his coaching career was too good to pass up and he can't wait to get started.

"I have always wanted to coach," he said. "I have always watched coaches to see what they do, good and bad, and how they get the best out of their players. I have studied the game all my life."

And he is not worried about being in charge, adding: "I'm a bossy person so it's quite normal for me!"

Pryce lives in Bradford with his family but says he will split his time between west Cumbria and Yorkshire.

"Obviously, I have family and my children are in school here but I will have a base up in Workington as well so I will split my time between living up here and getting back to my family," he explained.

But he won't be pulling his boots on for Workington, having firmly hung them up after a knee injury.

He said: "My knee is knackered, really I need a reconstruction. If my body could take it, I would probably still be playing but I can't.

"I have done my time, I've played over 500 games, so my time on the field is done."
