Testimonial star Jason Mossop will lead Workington Town from the front this season.

Mossop has been asked to take a leadership role at the club by new coach Dave Clark.

The strong-running centre will take on the mantle of club captain at Derwent Park in 2017.

"The club values Jason's experience," said Clark. "He will be a vital link between the squad, supporters and board.

"He will represent the team at functions and in the media, being the team's voice."

Mossop is one of a core of senior players at Derwent Park and is about to launch his testimonial year in January, granted for 10 years' service to the club.

He said he was looking forward to taking on the role.

"It is an honour to be asked to be captain of any side so, when Dave called me and asked me to take on the role, I was more than happy to do so," said Mossop.

"Off the pitch, I will be speaking on behalf of the players.

"There are some other experienced players in there with the likes of Kris Coward and Brett Phillips but it is quite a young side."

Mossop is holding a launch night for his testimonial, on January 20 at Whitehaven Golf Club.

And he will be supported on the night by some special guests from Super League.

His brother Lee Mossop, who has just joined Salford, will be there, along with Wigan stars Sam Tomkins and Liam Farrell. The trio will be guest speakers.

It is a ticket only event and for more information go to the Jason Mossop Testimonial page on Facebook or search for J.Mossop Testimonial on Twitter.

Mossop is planning a series of fundraising events, running from January through to the end of the year, and he announced last week he would support two local charities – West Cumbria Carers and the Copeland Occupational and Social Centre.
