Versatile Workington Town star Declan Hulme has held his hand up to take over the key full-back role this weekend in Jack Murphy’s absence.

Hulme was thrust into the number one position when Murphy had to leave the field against Leigh last Sunday through injury.

And with the reliable Murphy set to miss this weekend’s visit of Swinton Lions, Hulme is the man coach Phil Veivers looks to turn to.

“Injuries really had us at the weekend and we had to make the most of what we had available,” said Hulme.

“I am versatile and have played all over the park so I went right in to full-back when we had to make that change.”

Although the former Widnes Vikings man has played in a number of positions along the back line, full-back is new to him.

But he is more than willing to take on a new challenge and help Town through a rough patch.

“We have got a few injuries at the moment and I think I will probably be in there again against Swinton.

“I think Jack will probably be another week away with his dead leg.

“To be honest, I have never had to play full back but I have played at Super League level and I think I have picked up enough to know what is needed to play in that position. I enjoyed it at the weekend so if this is what we have available then I will give it a go.”

Hulme indicated that this was a huge match for Town as the Super Eights loom ever closer.

Workington are still rock bottom of the Championship and need to start picking up points to try and stave off relegation.

He added: “This is a must-win game for us, we are playing teams in and around us and we have to starting picking up points.

“We know that it is crunch time now. We have under-performed this year and that’s why we are where we are in the table.

“We have played the teams at the top of the league twice and they are out of the way. In the final quarter of the regular season we have to get the wins and the points.”
