Workington Town have snapped up highly-rated amateur centre Perry Singleton from Barrow Island.

The 22-year-old's glittering amateur career has seen him play for England Community Lions Under-18s, become an ever-present for Cumbria and captain the BARLA Lions Under-23s team on overseas tours.

Town coach Dave Clark said: "When I joined Town, Perry was one of the first on my hit list.

"He is a fast and strong-running centre that can change a game in a moment.

"I know that other clubs have been chasing him, so I’m delighted that he has chosen Town to turn professional.

"He shows great leadership on the pitch when he plays and I know that he’ll be a real handful for the opposition.

"He’s very skilful with the ball in hand and can also play back row. His flexibility will be a real asset to the team."

Town director of rugby Les Ashe coached Singleton in the Cumbria team that won the Tri-County competition against Lancashire and Yorkshire last year and believes he will make an immediate impact.

Ashe said: "Perry is great to coach. He’s a very gifted player but is always ready to listen.

"He’s achieved a tremendous amount in the amateur game and is now ready to take his rugby league career to the next level."

Singleton said Clark was the biggest factor in his decision to join Town.

He added: "After talking to Dave and Les Ashe, I knew that Town was the right opportunity for me.

"I liked what they told me about the club’s direction and I think it will be the perfect environment for me.

"I’ve achieved a lot in the amateur game and I’d like to thank Barrow Island and in particular John Jefferson for everything they’ve done for me.

"I’m now ready for the challenge in the professional game.’’
