Head coach Dave Clark praised the heroics of dual code star Gordon Maudling who grabbed the headlines with a star performance in Workington Town's 66-12 triumph at Hemel Stags.

“He’s come straight out of a community game into our environment and really impressed,” he said. “Gordon is elusive, runs with a bit of direction and commitment, and is very good defensively so offers us another dimension.

“He’s had a couple of weeks with us, so it will be very interesting to see how he goes in the remainder of the season. Also, he’s a local player as well, which is great for us as a club.”

Speaking after Town’s 11-try demolition job on Hemel, Clark was pleased with the result but wants his team to kick on.

“For the majority of the game, we performed really well,” he said. “We expressed ourselves, our handling was good and we got benefits out of the back of that with some nice tries.

“The fast start came down to the right mentality but the last 15 minutes was not the best we displayed in that game. We must have a mentality to be ruthless at times.

“We must stick to what works well, keep doing it and be patient. That is something we will learn from going forward.

“We built throughout the week to this match and these next five games will be really important for us. Hopefully, the result starts momentum going forward.”

Clark added: “Hemel asked a few questions of us and got over the line, so that is something we will have to look at and get right moving forward.

“It’s all about momentum. Prior to this game, bar the Barrow game and second half against Whitehaven, we’ve shown that we can play.

“Today, we saw long periods of that play and credit to Hemel, who stuck in there and played very well late on. They kept on going, challenging and asking questions but we came here to do a job and I’m glad we did it.”

Perry Singleton finished the game with a calf strain but there were no interchanges to bring him off.

“Hopefully, we’ll have a full selection for next week’s game against South Wales, which will be another challenge for us at home,” said Clark
