Kris Coward is hoping to play his part in Workington Town’s fight for Championship survival.

The strong-running prop is undecided if this will be his last year before hanging up his boots.

But says nobody in the Town team wants to be remembered for being relegated.

“Hopefully we can finish strongly and stay in this league,” said Coward.

“We don’t want to be known as the team that went down. We all have personal pride and we want to play the best standard of rugby we can.

“We all have to try our best and try and win every home game and pick off one or two away from home.”

And Coward said nobody should write them off as they have fought off relegation before.

“We have been in this situation before and gone on to put a nine or 10 game winning streak together,” he added.

“We know we can do it, we have the same nucleus of players that have been there before.

“We just need a bit of belief and to listen to what Phil (Veivers) is telling us. We need to try and put the off-field issues aside and crack on.”

Coward knows it is not an easy task, following last Sunday’s defeat at the hands of Oldham.

But he indicated the next two weeks as being crucial games for the club. Town first host Dewsbury on Sunday before neighbours Whitehaven come to the Zebra Claims Stadium a week later.

“It is going to be hard and we have another big game against Whitehaven to come,” said Coward. “If we can win this week and then take on Whitehaven, that would put us right back in the mix again.

“I don’t know whether I will finish at the end of this year or not but I would rather finish on a high than with relegation.

“I want to help Town stay in this league.”
