Prop Tom Walker is hoping to go head-to-head with his former club when Workington Town travel to Barrow Raiders on Saturday.

Walker left Derwent Park at the end of last season to join up with Barrow, saying he needed a fresh challenge.

And he says, despite their early season success, league leaders Barrow have more to offer as they are still not firing on all cylinders.

“We have had a great start to the season which is scary because I don’t think we have been playing our best rugby,” admitted the former Warrington Wolves Academy star.

“We have been putting big scores on teams and playing pretty average.

“We would like a dry track and that’s when you will see the best of us.”

Walker says it will feel strange lining up against his former team-mates from last season in the League One clash at Craven Park, kick-off 6.30pm.

“It’s a bit weird if I’m honest as I’ve still got a lot of friends up there,” said Walker.

“Obviously, they have had a difficult time, but they have recruited well with some strong former BARLA players from the amateur ranks and the likes of Stuart Howarth. But we are always up for a big game and especially a derby.”

He warned that Town would not be a pushover for high-flying Barrow, who are top of the league and unbeaten so far.

“You have to look at some of their players who are still there,” added the 23-year-old.

“The Phillips brothers are Scottish internationals who played in the Four Nations at the back end of last year and they are a massive threat.

“And they have experience with the likes of Alex Szostak. Plus, we will have to watch out for some of the new outside backs they have signed who look dangerous.”

Walker admitted he is relishing the new demands of him under boss Paul Crarey at Craven Park.

“I had to do what was best for me at the end of last season and that was to get away and get a new challenge,” said Walker.

“Everyone here made me feel welcome and I am starting to enjoy my rugby again.”
