Anthony Wright will miss the start of the Evo-Stik premier division season for Workington Reds.

The defender, who played a big part in the run-up to the play-off final last season, is still struggling with injury.

And team manager Derek Townsley says he is still waiting for a full diagnosis.

"Until Anthony gets a scan there is not a lot anybody can do," explained Townsley.

"We are still waiting on a diagnosis of the problem. He needs a scan first and foremost and he needs to see a specialist then we can see what we can do to help.

"But it doesn't look like he will start the season."

But the good news is that Joe McGee could rejoin the squad in training as early as next week.

He has had a knee problem, which he picked up in Reds' play-off final defeat at Salford in April.

"Joe is a sensible lad and he likes to keep himself fit so we know he will be on with his rehab," added Townsley.

"We wanted to give him an extra couple of weeks to get himself sorted before he joined up with the lads for pre-season.

"Hopefully we will have him involved at some point."

And his views were echoed by joint manager Dave Hewson, who says McGee could have a big say on the season ahead.

He added: "It was a

big boost to keep hold of Joe. We know what he brings to the squad.

"He was so happy with how last season went and he enjoys playing for the club and playing with the lads so it's great for us to have him signed

"He has been struggling a little bit with the knee injury and we didn't want to rush him but another week and then he'll join up with the squad."

Reds are looking towards tomorrow night now and their clash at Gretna FC.
