Workington co-manager Dave Hewson gave credit to Marine after the Merseysiders inflicted the first Evo-Stik Premier Division defeat on the Reds last night.

Two second-half goals gave the Crosby-based side a deserved victory as Workington failed to live up to the expectations after Saturday’s good home win.

“I think we should give credit to Marine for the way they’ve responded after a big defeat on Saturday," said Hewson.

“Now we have to do the same and come up with a reaction as we have a big game at Nantwich.

“I think the difference from Saturday was that we weren’t as clinical in our finishing as we did create number of chances.

“I wasn’t happy with the goals we conceded as well, which wasn’t like us. We are normally tighter than that at the back."

Skipper Aaran Taylor had kept Reds level at the break with a penalty save.

But goals in the 49th and 64th minutes gave the home side the three points.

Reds had to go into the game without Saturday’s star man Anthony Wright after his partner gave birth to a baby boy at the weekend.

There has also been a concern over striker Nathan Waterston who was taken to hospital after the 3-1 win against Halesowen.

He has an infection in his knee which has required surgery and he is likely to be out of action for at least three weeks.

But there’s more positive news about Conor Tinnion, who hasn’t figured so far because of a hamstring injury.

“By giving Conor the week off, I am hopeful that he will be ready to return on Saturday,” said Hewson.
