Workington Reds secured a glamour tie against Hartlepool United after a superb victory over Glossop North End in the FA Trophy third round qualifying replay.

Reds won the encounter 5-1 thanks to two fantastic spells at the start of both halves.

Workington were on top throughout but the visitors did have their chances, especially in a purple patch towards the end of the first half.

Glossop had to make a few changes from the side that held Reds to a draw at the weekend and they travelled with just two substitutes, one of which being their co-manager Stephen Halford.

Their other manager Paul Phillips began in goal and both bosses had to take to the field by the end of the 90 minutes.

It was a fantastic start for Workington as they took the lead in the seventh minute. Dave Symington got in a cross to the far post where Matty Douglas rose the highest to head home past the keeper.

Sam Joel got on to a good ball through from Symington and was closing in on goal when he was brought down in the box.

The referee didn't hesitate and pointed straight to the penalty spot, where Scott Allison then stepped up and struck it hard into the back of the net to double the lead.

Glossop went right back up to the opposite end of the field and tried to get back into the game, Reds having to defend three successive corners which they did with ease.

But, by the 22nd minute, Workington had gone 3-0 ahead with a lovely pass from Allison into the path of Sam Joel. And he finished it well, striking the ball past the keeper.

More good work from Symington down the left-hand flank had Glossop on the back foot and he got in another good cross which came back out to Phil McLuckie on the edge of the area. He struck it hard but the ball weaved to the right of the target.

There was further danger from Symington who switched to the right-hand side and was dancing through the defenders but his final shot lacked a little power and went straight through to the keeper.

Tinnion then got into the action and got the ball into the area where it was headed down towards McLuckie, who found himself in the clear on the edge of the area again.

This time he struck it straight and true but Paul Phillips, in the Glossop goal, took it safely.

Against the run of play, Glossop were back in the thick of the action when the ball was headed down to Zeph Thomas at the far post and he had a simple tap-in to get the visitors on the scoreboard.

This seemed to spur the visitors on and they came to life, putting the Reds defence under some real pressure.

And when the half-time whistle came, it was to the relief of Workington to give them time to regroup.

But Reds began the second half in style to dispel any doubts on the terraces. The half was only 40 seconds old when they restored their three-goal advantage.

Scott Allison took the ball forward and drew in the defence before lofting the ball over to the waiting Symington and he made no mistake, hammering the ball into the back of the net to give Reds the perfect start to the half.

And just minutes later Joel laid the ball back for Symington who raced on to it on the edge of the area and drilled it home for his second and Reds' fifth of the game.

Tinnion tried to get in on the goal scoring act as he turned and shot but the well-struck effort went wide of the post.

And there was nearly a superb goal from Gari Rowntree who took the shot from around 40-yards out and it looked to be dipping into the goal but the fingertips of Phillips just put the ball over the bar.

From the resulting corner, sub Nathan Waterston got the ball into the back of the net but the linesman's flag was raised for offside.

Reds continued to dazzle their opponents, as great work from Waterston looked to play Douglas in but he just slid as he made contact and the ball came loose.

Then, great inter-play saw the ball reach the feet of Allison just in front of the goal but his effort was blocked by a desperate defence.

After a lull in the action, Reds upped the pace as Symington got in the clear and put in an early ball, searching for the head of Waterston who connected but couldn't get it on target.

Jamie Mellen slotted a lovely diagonal ball finding Symington out on the right and he looked to get his hat-trick as he hammered the ball towards the goal but the keeper reacted quickly to parry it away.

In the dying minutes, Tinnion was brought down just outside the area and Symington stood over the ball, with another chance for his hat-trick but he ballooned the effort over the bar.

Symington may have finished with just the two goals but the crucial thing for Reds was the convincing 5-1 result, a nice cash boost and a tie with Hartlepool waiting.
