Workington Reds 3 Shildon 1: Workington Reds put their name into the hat for the third qualifying round of the FA Cup after a 3-1 victory over Shildon.

Reds had a shaky start but recovered to go 3-0 ahead early in the second half, although they had keeper Aaran Taylor to thank for a great penalty save before half-time.

Taylor could not halt the second penalty later on in the game as Shildon got their consolation, which was well deserved as the Northern League outfit put on a good display of passing football.

Yet again, Josh Calvert was outstanding for Reds while Conor Tinnion showed plenty of flair and pace to give his side attacking options.

It took Reds a while to settle into the game while Shildon set about their business and looked the better side in the early exchanges.

Reds' best chance came from James Earl who blasted a shot from the edge of the area, forcing a diving save from the Shildon keeper.

But then, Shildon put the pressure on as Stephen Capper fed Paul Connor whose shot went out for a corner.

Matt Douglas stepped up to clear the danger from the corner and then Rob Wilson cleared from a James Harwood header.

Joe McGee tried his hand as he drove a shot in from the edge of the area but the Shildon keeper Nicholas Liversedge made the save.

Taylor at the opposite end punched clear from a corner and then Tinnion put his shot over the crossbar as the game went from end to end.

Both sides traded free kicks in dangerous areas. First Shildon as Lewis Wing looked to curl the ball in but it was right at Taylor.

Then Jake Simpson found the head of Douglas but his header went just over the bar.

The best chance of the half fell to Scott Allison as Liversedge made an error with his clearance and it fell at the feet of the forward.

He took the keeper on but had to watch as his shot rolled across the goalmouth.

But he made up for his error moments later and put Reds ahead.

Earl put the ball into Allison's path and he struck a nice shot into the back of the net leaving the keeper stranded.

Shildon had a chance to level the game before half-time when they were awarded a spot kick.

Ferguson blasted the penalty at Taylor but he produced another fine save and then regathered at the second attempt to keep Reds 1-0 in front.

And just before the break, Daniel Moore picked the ball out from a corner but saw it bounce off the crossbar and Reds retained a slender lead at the break.

The home side came out after the break determined to extend their lead and put the game to bed.

Dave Symington's cross was met by the head of Wilson but the keeper saved.

However, he could not prevent Reds from going 2-0 ahead on 48 minutes.

Simpson managed to pick out the head of Tinnion with his cross and he connected well to send the ball into the top corner.

McGee flew down the right flank and looked to cross into the path of Allison racing into the box but the ball went just behind him.

Then, on 57 minutes, McGee made it 3-0 when he struck the ball well from the edge of the area.

The keeper had to get down well to stop an early shot from Tinnion as Reds looked to clean up.

But their visitors were not giving up without a fight and they threw everything at their hosts to try and get back in the game.

Moore saw his header go over the bar and then Wing's free kick went right into the waiting arms of Taylor.

Tinnion did well to beat his man and he tried to thread the ball through for sub Tom Kilifin but it just went too far and the keeper collected.

And Tinnion had another shot saved by the keeper before Shildon got their chance to get on the scoresheet.

Ferguson was brought down by Douglas in the penalty area and the referee pointed to the spot for the second time in the game.

This time Billy Greulich-Smith, who had spent time at Borough Park under the rule of Darren Edmondson, stepped up to put the ball in the back of the net for 3-1.

Reds saw out the remainder of the game to clinch the win and a place in the next round draw, to be held today.
