Workington Reds are in talks with a potential signing to replace Joe McGee who stunned the club with his decision to quit earlier this week.

Joint manager Lee Andrews said they were in discussions with a target and they hoped it would have a positive outcome.

Merseyside-based McGee left to join his former club and Reds' league rivals Buxton, to put himself in the shop window and reduce his travelling time.

Workington are gearing up for a tough trip to face Matlock Town tomorrow and, apart from the loss of McGee, they should have a full squad to choose from.

And Andrews admitted confidence had been key to their latest set of positive league results.

"It's all down to confidence I think. We knew that, if we could grind out a couple of results, then confidence would start to come back," he said.

"Now, it is about not getting carried away. We don't need to look too far ahead and just take each game at a time."

Matlock lie just two places below Reds in the league table and the two sides have already met three times this season - in the space of a week in October.

"We played them three times and they were three completely different games," admitted Andrews.

"But we do know it will be difficult, as all our games in this league are.

"But we are confident in what we have got and what we can do. We just need to go there and do ourselves justice."

Andrews also said he thinks Dave Symington has a lot more to give as he moves further up the field into a more attacking role.

Symington bagged a hat-trick last weekend and Andrews said the former Carlisle United player is just starting to show his true potential.

"There is still a lot more to come from Dave," he said. "He is starting to show signs of what he can do.

"Now he has a chance to play further up the field, fulfil his potential and show everyone what he has got in the bag."
