Workington were denied a vital win when Frickley scored an equaliser in the third of four minutes of added time.

Reds had been behind at half-time but goals from Joe McGee and Dave Symington seemed to have put them in charge after Frickley had defender Bailey Gooda sent-off on 52 minutes.

Phil McLuckie had travelled but was not able to take any part in the game, while Sam Smith dropped out following the death of his grandmother.

But Reds did have James Earl and Kyle May back into the squad after they missed out on Saturday.

Included on the bench was 16-year-old Jay Weatherill, a Cleator Moor forward who has been scoring goals regularly for Celtic reserves.

Frickley, who had lost at Workington in the second game of the season, went into the match bottom-of-the-table and without a point.

Reds won the first corner of the game but it was easily cleared and Frickley had their first opportunity to get the ball forward following a foul by Josh Calvert. But Workington easily dealt with it.

Conor Tinnion did well to get past a defender and cut in from the left but his shot was deflected into the waiting arms of Polish keeper Sebastian Malkowski.

When Frickley countered on eight minutes, they scored.

Cameron Rigby broke down the left and, although Matty Douglas was in close attendance, he got in a shot which Arron Taylor blocked. But the ball fell kindly for Tom Guest to fire into the net.

Reds had been looking for a win and an overdue clean sheet, so that was a big setback.

Tinnion went close to an equaliser on 14 minutes with a shot on the run which Malkowski just managed to turn round the post. The corner was cleared but Dave Symington hit a pile-driver from 30 yards which bounced off the keeper’s chest before he gathered.

Good work out on the right by Scott Allison eventually produced a chance of a shot over on the left but Earl was well off target.

The first booking came on 21 minutes when Bailey Gooda brought down Allison on the left-hand edge of the area. Jake Simpson’s free-kick was over-hit and went harmlessly behind.

Workington were seeing plenty of the ball but Frickley looked dangerous on the counter.

Tinnion was looking lively and, when he jinked past a defender, a curling cross was headed wide by Joe McGee.

Tinnion was the first Workington player to be booked on 29 minutes.

He had shown great skill in a tight situation, only to give the ball away. And in his frustration, he tripped the onrushing Nathan Valentine.

The Workington winger responded well with more trickery and a curling cross that was headed behind for the corner. The flag kick was cleared and Tinnion’s return ball was fisted clear by Malkowski.

Reds had the ball in the net on 35 minutes but May was penalised for a foul after flicking the ball on for Tinnion to find the net.

Workington continued to go forward but McGee was off target with a wild shot at goal and Reds went in at the break 1-0 down.

Workington started the second-half positively and won a free-kick on the edge of the area when McGee was fouled but Tinnion curled his effort over the top.

Symington was next to try his luck with a shot from the edge of the area which just dipped over the bar.

Frickley were reduced to 10 men on 52 minutes when Gooda was sent-off for a second yellow, again for a foul on Allison.

New manager Lee Morris responded by sending on defender Jack Waters for winger Rigby.

It was all Workington after that. Symington put in a great cross and McGee headed over the bar.

A goal eventually came on 61 minutes. Again, it was a cross from the left by Symington and after two defenders missed it, Tinnion won the ball in a tackle and when it fell to McGee he fired low into the corner of the net.

Allison almost gave Workington the lead on 64 minutes. Earl chipped the ball forward and Alion lifted it over the advancing Malkowski. But just as it was about to bounce over the line the ball was booted clear by Rhys Meynall.

It was one-way traffic and Douglas, on the ground, got in the shot after a goalmouth scramble which was straight at Malkowski.

Earl was putting in a good shift for the Reds and on a couple of occasions won key tackles and used the ball cleverly to prompt attacks.

Allison was sent through by Douglas and he got on the end of it under pressure but Malkowski held well.

On a rare breakout, Frickley won a corner but Reds cleared and Allison was sent through by. He got on the end of it under pressure but Malkowski held his shot well.

Frickley came again and won another corner but this time a returned ball was headed wide.

After 79 minutes, Workington made their first substitution with Nathan Waterston replacing Earl and he arrived in time to see Reds grab the lead.

Tinnion was fouled on the edge of the area and Symington blasted the free-kick past the wall and beyond Malkowski.

Four minutes from the end, Tom Kilifin came on for Allison, who had run hard and willingly all night.

But there was disaster for the Reds in the third minute of time added on when substitute McCauley Parkinson was left clear in the box and he shot past Taylor.
