Workington Reds chairman Glenn Heathcote is calling on supporters to get behind the team ahead of his side's FA Cup match against Warrington this afternoon.

The two Northern Premier League sides will do battle at Borough Park at 3pm for a place in the second qualifying round.

The winner of the tie will receive £3,000 and will be just three games away from a place in the first round proper.

If Reds were to make it to the first round proper, they could potentially bank about £25,000 in prize money and gate receipts.

Derek Townsley's side go into the match on the back of a Bank Holiday Monday defeat at promotion rivals Blyth Spartans.

Heathcote said: "For a club like ours, every pound is valuable and hopefully we can get two or three cup wins and the prize money is welcome.

"It's important to get a good crowd in the cup. We have to share the gate money after expenses and you don't get the benefit of all the money.

"The higher the crowd, the more income we get from that. The cup has romance and it's a great opportunity for the town to witness an FA Cup tie."

The squad trained on Thursday night ahead of the game, but defenders Gari Rowntree and Anthony Wright will miss the tie.

Opponents Warrington famously beat Exeter City in front of the television cameras two years ago before going out to Gateshead in round two.

Reds hammered Colwyn Bay 5-0 in the first qualifying round last year before losing narrowly to National League North side Harrogate in the next round.

Heathcote added: "The money will help to keep the club running. The budget is very tight and it ensures that we can keep the club going and helps us out.

"It ensures our bills are paid and that we can keep the squad.

"Cup days are very special. I went to the cup final in 2015 when Arsenal beat Aston Villa.

"Arsenal were fantastic and that was the best team performance in a cup tie I have seen."
