Disappointed co-manager Dave Hewson admitted Workington Reds' performance simply "wasn’t good enough" as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Matlock Town.

A lacklustre display from the Reds saw them lose their unbeaten record at Borough Park with a penalty being the difference between the two sides.

Hewson said too many players were off their game, and that he and fellow manager Lee Andrews would have to address the problem ahead of tomorrow's trip to Ashton United.

“In the first half, we kept the ball and had the most possession but we didn’t do anything with that possession,” said Hewson.

“We weren’t decisive enough, didn’t look to penetrate them in any way and we didn’t trouble the keeper.

“And I will be brutally honest, the second half was not good enough and it is something we need to address and address quickly.”

Hewson said the team were capable of a better performance than the one they delivered on Saturday.

“We have quality in the team but, unfortunately, for me today too many were off their game and when that happens we are always going to struggle,” he added.

“I truly believe that the squad, on its day, is a match for anyone but there is too much inconsistency.

“We didn’t try and hurt them and I felt like we dropped significantly after the goal. There wasn’t the response that we should get and the response that we demand when we go a goal behind, which I’m disappointed with.”

Reds looked lacking in creating any real chances and Hewson admitted they were looking to bring another player in.

“There were not a lot of forward opportunities from the bench and we’re working on that at the moment, looking at a potential player we can bring in,” said Hewson. “It’s in its infancy but we are working hard.”

Nathan Waterston is back in training and hoping to get back in the team.

Reds have a chance to atone tomorrow at Ashton and Hewson admitted he wants a reaction from his players.

He added: “The games are coming thick and fast and we need a reaction, they have to respond.

“There’s no point in feeling sorry for yourself and dwelling on it, you have to be big and strong, dust yourself down, and you have to go and put it right.

“If we go to Ashton and play the same way, there will be only one outcome so, again, we talk about responsibility, that’s mine and Lee’s we have to lift them.

“We have to make significant changes to get a better performance tomorrow.”
