Deflated Workington Reds boss Dave Hewson admitted his side didn’t deserve anything out of their clash with Barwell on Saturday.

Reds fell to their first defeat of the season when they put in a poor performance at Borough Park.

Barwell clinched the game with a lone goal in the second half as Reds missed a penalty and a shot right in front of goal.

Hewson said: “We didn’t deserve anything from the game. We were out-fought, out-battled and didn’t win enough first and second balls.

“There was just so much wrong. In 90 minutes we had about 10 minutes of decent football and that’s not good enough to win any game.”

After opening the season with two victories, Hewson said they were all disappointed with the defeat and not taking up their chances.

He added: “It is frustrating, considering how poorly we played. We still created chances to maybe get a goal and nick something.

“But when you miss a penalty and a chance at the end from about six yards goes over the bar, you just know it’s not going to be your day.

“It was very flat and we seemed lethargic. We lacked that tempo and energy that we’ve had for the last two games, the lads all know that.

“In this league, you can have all the quality in the world but if you don’t word hard and do the horrible side of the game right then you don’t get anything out of it.

“We didn’t do that side of it and our quality didn’t come through either. Nothing clicked into place.”

Hewson is now turning his attention to their trip to Buxton tomorrow night, and picking their form back up.

“It’s early on in the season,” he said. “We’ve got off to a good start with two games and two wins.

“Unfortunately we didn’t carry that on.”
