Workington Reds 3 Spennymoor Town 0

Three quick-fire goals just inside the second half saw Workington Reds seal victory over Spennymoor Town.

Reds kept another clean sheet as they saw off their visitors 3-0 in a good performance at Borough Park.

The victory was the fourth in a row in the league as they moved up to seventh, just one point off the play-offs.

A superb spell just inside the second half, as Reds bagged three quick-fire goals, put the game beyond much doubt.

Conor Tinnion claimed the first and then in-form Scott Allison collected two in eight minutes.

Reds had played some nice football throughout the match but, particularly in the second half, they dominated their visitors.

They were unlucky not to get off the mark in the first half but they made up for it in the latter stages as they sealed another important win.

Reds got out of jail early on as Adam Mitchell beat Gari Rowntree to a long ball and cut the ball across the goal for the chasing Graeme Armstrong but his connection was poor and it slid the wrong side of the post.

Rob Wilson tried his luck with a strike from 25-yards out but it ricocheted off a defender as the game swung from end to end.

Aaran Taylor had to come out of his area to shut down an opportunity for Armstrong as the visitors showed their intent.

Reds had a chance with a free kick that was curled into the box by Jake Simpson but the Spennymoor keeper Andrew Rafferty claimed it under pressure from Sam Smith.

Rowntree managed to find Jack Ryan in space in the box and he got the ball across but, despite a number of bodies in the area, nobody could get a real shot away.

Then, into the 24th minute, Ryan was challenged by the keeper and brought down with the ref immediately pointing to the penalty spot.

He then stood over the ball and took aim with a low and straight attempt but the keeper was up to the challenge and saved.

But it came loose and Elliot Newby had a chance with the rebound but that was blocked and Spennymoor were off the hook.

Ryan had a chance to make amends seconds later as Newby played a lovely through ball to his feet in the centre of the park but his shot was just wide of the target.

Reds were nearly caught out on the break when Mark Anderson put a header wide and then a great tackle from Sam Smith halted the Spennymoor attack when they were looking dangerous.

Tinnion twisted and turned to get a shot away just in front of goal but it took a slight deflection off Joseph Tait and the keeper palmed it away.

With just a couple of minutes to go before half time, Allison had a chance in the area but he pulled it wide and it stayed 0-0 at half time.

Into the second half and Reds had a free kick just inside the Spennymoor half as Allison was brought down by James Curtis, who received a yellow card for his troubles.

A short kick was taken and then it was floated into the area but nobody could connect and Spennymoor came away.

Finally, Reds got the breakthrough their hard work deserved in the 56th minute as Tinnion got the ball on the edge of the area.

He beat a couple of defenders and then let loose a great shot across the goal and into the far corner, beating the diving keeper.

Reds could have doubled their lead moments later as Ryan rose up in the box and his header went just over the top of the crossbar.

And, in the 61st minute, it was 2-0 as Allison took on the keeper and lofted it over his head and into the back of the net.

Spennymoor had a chance when a free kick reached the head of an onrushing Joseph Tait on the far side but his header went wide.

Tait then got a yellow card for a foul on Allison and Simpson's resulting free kick was put out for a corner that the visitors managed to clear.

But a rampant Reds made it 3-0 in the 69th minute. Rob Wilson put in a great cross and Allison met it at the far post to head home.

Taylor made a good save to stop the shot of Andrew Johnson but Spennymoor's chances were few and far between as the half continued.

Sub Joe McGee put a good ball into the path of Earl but his shot flashed wide of the post as Reds looked to make the most of their opportunities.

Aaran Taylor blocked another good effort as Glen Taylor found himself in space with just the keeper to beat but the Reds keeper stood up well.

Spennymoor continued to push into added time and Taylor found himself with his busiest period as he tipped a great shot from Anderson onto the crossbar.

The final whistle blew and Reds could savour another victory and another clean sheet as they continue their rise up the league.
