In the end it was a clear cut scoreline for Workington Reds as they recorded a 4-1 victory over visitors Rushall Olympic.

But it wasn't all plain sailing for the Borough Park outfit as, despite dominating play for much of the game, the flurry of goals came late in the game.

Reds were well on top in the first half but only had a slender 1-0 lead at the break. Rushall equalised early in the second half but then three goals in the final 15 minutes sealed the win in style.

Rushall were no pushovers and they caused some problems in the second half for their hosts but Reds always looked likely to take the points.

But, as the first half was coming to a close with both sides still deadlocked, some fans may have been forgiven for thinking the goal was never coming.

Reds were providing all of the early pressure and Dave Symington was causing all kinds of problems for the visiting right back.

The home side were pushing all the time at the Rushall defence but it was the final finish that was lacking.

Early on, Symington got into space on the left hand side he came inside and unleashed a lovely shot which the keeper could only parry away.

Scott Allison looked to get in for the rebound but the Rushall defence closed him down.

Then Jordan Holt tried his luck with a cross cum shot but it was wide of the target and Sam Joel had to battle on the far side to win a throw-in.

There was a nice couple of touches from Holt and Matty Douglas who combined to try and feed a ball through to Allison in the area but again he was quickly closed down.

Then Rushall suddenly appeared to come to life, shaking off the long journey and Mathis Fonovich looked to try and get his side back in the game but the Reds defence was holding firm.

And at the opposite end they were immediately back on the attack with another Symington run ending with a shot that went just wide of the target.

It was the former Carlisle United player that was in the thick of it once again as he lofted a cross back for the waiting Rob Wilson. He struck it firmly but his effort was wide.

Douglas then found the ball just outside the area and looked to continue his recent goal scoring exploits. He turned and shot but again the effort was narrowly off target.

On the counter Rushall's Sam Whitall broke clear and fed the ball in for Mohammed Hakeem who went one-on-one with Taylor.

Reds found themselves extremely lucky as his effort went across the goal and Wordsworth stepped in with a crucial clearance.

Keeping up their first real spell of pressure, Rushall then won a free kick just outside the area as Josh Calvert blocked the run of Fonovich.

The same player stood over the ball but his first attempt was blocked by the home wall and the second cleared.

Play swung from end to end as Wilson put in a neat ball looking for the run of Allison in the box but the visiting keeper just won the race.

Aaran Taylor made his first real save in the 36th minute when Charlie Duke found himself onside and in a dangerous position. he struck the ball with some force but Taylor was up to the challenge and parried it out for a corner, which he dealt with easily.

Just when it looked as though the half would finish at 0-0, there came a moment of clarity for Reds.

Just inside the 39th minute, Tinnion lofted in a nice free kick and it was the scoring machine of Matty Douglas who rose the highest to head the ball downwards and goalwards, leaving the keeper helpless.

A challenge on Fonovich saw the Rushall attacker forced to leave the field, to be replaced by Richard Brodie and the two teams played out the last couple of minutes with no further excitement.

Rushall came out for the second half looking hungrier and they had a great chance when Danny Waldron pushed the ball right across the face of the open Workington goal but nobody could get onto the end of it.

But Reds were quick to counter and won a corner at the other end. Symington put in a great ball and Wordsworth's powerful header went inches past the wrong side of the post.

Holt had a chance when he looked to head home but it was mis-directed and went out for a goal kick.

He was in the thick of it seconds later as he looked to play Joel in inside the area but this time their keeper was quick to get to the ball.

Then came the blow as Charlie Duke lifted in a free kick from the edge of the area and it was Joe Hall who headed past a diving Aaran Taylor into the bottom corner of the Reds goal to level matters.

But Reds never looked down, Allison received a long ball and waited until he had support from Joel. They looked to play a one-two before Allison went down in the box but the referee waved play on.

They nearly restored their advantage when Symington looked to get the ball through a sea of bodies before an effort from Joel had to be tipped over the bar by the keeper.

Reds were looking dangerous and they finally got their just reward with 13 minutes remaining.

Joel unleashed a shot which the keeper could only push away from the goalmouth and there was Allison to poach the goal, tapping home from close range.

The forward duo combined again moments later and Reds fans thought they had their third when Joel looked to beat the keeper but the shot went agonisingly wide.

Reds had to defend a corner with the clock ticking down and a short header from Butterfield had supporters' hearts in their mouths but he put it just over the crossbar.

But the home side had saved the best for last and it came from super sub Nathan Waterston, on the field for Joel.

He got onto the end of a long ball from Symington and skipped past the defender before taking on the keeper and hammering it past him and into the back of the net.

And the scoring wasn't finished as Allison stepped up to get his second, again slotting the ball home past a despairing Hill for the game to finish at 4-1.
