Workington Reds striker Gareth Arnison has left the club following talks with the management team.

The 29-year-old rejoined Reds ahead of the 2014/15 season following a spell at Barrow and scored 10 goals as his side narrowly missed out on promotion.

Last season he scored 16 goals in all competitions with his last appearance for the club coming against Aspatria in the Cumberland Cup where he scored in a 4-1 victory.

Arnison, who also scored in the 3-2 play-off final defeat at Salford, missed pre-season and has been let go.

Joint manager Dave Hewson said: "It was a very difficult decision and one which we've not taken lightly.

"First and foremost we want to thank Gareth for all he's done at the club from when people like me were players and since we've been involved in the management team.

"He's given so much to the team and contributed so much with regards to the level we're playing at."

"It's unfortunate circumstances and it's unfortunate that his illness has meant that he's not been to get to the level of fitness required.

"We were not able to take that risk again and we didn't know when he would and wouldn't be available for games."

Arnison began his career with Reds and had a loan spell with Kendal during the 2006/07 season which became a permanent move that summer.

He then returned to Reds in the summer of 2008 where he stayed until 2013.

The striker then joined Barrow, who were playing in the National League North at the time, before rejoining Reds two years ago.

Despite Arnison's departure, Hewson has ruled out making any further signings and said the first team squad is now full.

Hewson added: "We've got nothing but praise and respect for everything he's done for the club.

"We really do appreciate it."

Reds are next in action on Saturday when they host Warrington in the FA Cup.
