Workington Reds skipper Gari Rowntree could be back in action by the end of September.

Rowntree went under the knife on Saturday to fix a knee injury which saw him miss the back end of last season including his side’s play-off final defeat at Salford.

Team manager Derek Townsley said the Workington-born left back's operation was a success and he is hopeful of a return in around eight to 10 weeks.

"I spoke to Gari and he said it all went as well as expected so it's now just a case of waiting for him to recover," said Townsley.

"He has to do nothing for a few weeks and then he can begin his rehab so all being well we are looking at around eight to 10 weeks.

"I would like to think he might be back for the end of September or around that periods if everything goes to plan."

Reds are back in action tonight in their third pre-season friendly as they take on Carlisle City at Gilford Park, ko 7.30pm.

Townsley indicated that a number of the reserves side could get a run out in the clash as they try and ensure that everyone has had game time.

"We will probably look to mix it up, a number of the reserves lads are coming along," said Townsley.

"Given that one or two of the first teamers are unavailable as well this is a good chance for the younger ones to step up.

"It gives us the opportunity to have a look at them as well.

"At this stage we don't really want to give lads 90 minutes and hammer them as we still have another half a dozen friendlies left."

Calum Henderson, Lewis Jolly and Cameron Carter all stepped up to play first team against Carlisle on Saturday and impressed bosses.

Townsley added: "I thought the reserves that played against Carlisle all acquitted themselves really well.

"Again it was a good opportunity for them not only to play in front of a good crowd but also against professional opposition.

"Hopefully they all enjoyed the experience."
