Workington Reds suffered a second successive 2-0 defeat on the road and saw another player join a worrying injury list.

The setback at Nantwich Town was compounded by an ankle injury to Rob Wilson, who joins Nathan Waterston, Gari Rowntree and James Earl in the treatment room.

Wilson was the victim of a 13th minute tackle from home defender Troy Bourne but bravely battled on after treatment before hobbling off after an hour. The impact from the tackle was right on scar tissue from an earlier injury which required surgery.

Wilson will certainly miss tomorrow’s home match against Witton Albion and is likely to be out for several weeks.

It added to the frustration of joint-boss, David Hewson, who watched his side fail to

score again despite creating numerous chances at the Weaver Stadium.

A Sam Smith own-goal five minutes before the interval and a well taken Jordan

Davies effort two minutes after the restart, condemned Reds to a second loss

leaving them in the lower reaches of the embryonic Evo-Stik Premier Division table.

“Our game plan was to stay in contention for as long as possible and this we did well

for forty minutes until things turned against us. Sam has conceded a free kick with a

clumsy challenge and then diverts the ball past Aaran Taylor for an unfortunate OG.”

“Had Scott Allison equalised at the start of the second half I’m sure we would have

gone on to win, but he was denied by another excellent save and two minutes later

we concede a sloppy goal and are chasing the game,” added Hewson.

Reds were repeatedly thwarted by Nantwich’s man-of- the-match, goalkeeper

Krystian Burzynski, who pulled off a string of fine saves, the best of which a full

length dive to keep out Sam Joel’s goal-bound shot.

But the pattern of the game followed that of the Marine encounter five days earlier

with Reds on top in the later stages when two goals in arrears.

“It wasn’t to be today but we will take out the positives from the performance and

move on to Tuesday,” concluded Hewson.

One of those positives was the return of Conor Tinnion who played the final half hour

without any reaction to his hamstring problem. He will be involved against fifth

placed Witton as will Allison, who sustained a cut after colliding with an advertising

hoarding, with Earl’s chances of a return rated as 50/50.
