Halesowen 1 Workington Reds 5

Back-to-back wins on their travels have put Workington’s season back on course.

Since a below-par performance in a home defeat by Matlock, the west Cumbrians have responded in positive fashion.

They now have two home games coming up this week when a couple more victories would push them into a challenging league position.

This latest success away from home was comfortable in the end but it hadn’t started like that.

In fact, it was downright edgy for the first 15 minutes or so when bottom- of-the-table Halesowen looked lively and eager.

To the hard-headed members of the Halesowen press, it was something they hadn’t seen from their team so far.

An early goal had lifted them. Enthusiastic centre-forward Daniel Udoh took it well, cutting in from the right and then curling a low show beyond Aaran Taylor into the far corner.

The hosts had a good shout for a penalty soon after and then Dan Wordsworth had to make a fine block when Udoh was threatening again.

But, gradually, Reds found their rhythm, started to keep the ball better and were passing pleasingly.

Young Jack Egan almost levelled when he got in behind the home defence but screwed his shot past the keeper and across goal.

With possession stats mounting, Workington drew level on 35 minutes from a lovely move.

Three of the midfielders – Jordan Holt, Conor Tinnion and James Earl – were all involved before Scott Allison latched on to the final pass to drill past keeper Daniel Platt.

Four minutes later, Reds were in front and it was a memorable moment for teenager Egan.

Home full-back Jack Kelly made a mess of a headed clearance which flew high across the edge of the penalty area.

Platt had committed himself and Egan, the smallest man on the field, headed unchallenged towards goal.

To everyone’s delight – well, everyone of a Workington persuasion – the ball struck the foot of the post before rebounding to nestle just inside the opposite upright.

Two goals in the first six minutes of the second half virtually wrapped up the game for Reds.

On 48 minutes, Tinnion tried his luck from just inside the area. The shot was curling wide but, showing great anticipation, Egan raced in late to hammer into the roof of the net.

Then, on 51 minutes, came the hammer blow for Halesowen.

Allison played in a ball from the right and from just outside the area Dave Symington thundered a half-volley into the net. The keeper hardly moved as it whistled past him.

Sam Smith had to head a shot off the line and Taylor made a fine block on his line as Halesowen tried for some consolation.

But after Tinnion had hit a post, Reds fittingly had the last word – and it was appropriate that young Holt would score the fifth.

A strong, purposeful performance in midfield was crowned by his first goal in senior football.

Earl lifted a clever ball over the last defender and Holt raced through to steer his shot past Platt.
