WORKINGTON Reds defender Jake Simpson says today's match with Carlisle is an ideal test in his side's pre-season preparations.

The sides go head-to-head in a friendly match at Borough Park at 3pm.

Reds beat Whitehaven 5-0 in their first pre-season game and face Carlisle City, Gretna 2008, Penrith, West Auckland Town, Queen of the South, Lancaster City and Kendal Town in the coming weeks.

Simpson, a former Carlisle youth player, said: "It's a big game and always one we look forward to.

"We're lucky to get Carlisle most seasons and it's good to play against teams from a higher division.

"It's nice for us as players to test ourselves to play against professional and full-time players.

"People from Workington keep their eye on Carlisle and their fans will make a day of it."

Reds have several ex-Carlisle players in their ranks including David Symington who has rejoined his former club.

General manager Derek Townsley is hoping for a bumper crowd and fans could get their first glimpse of former Lancaster striker Tom Kilifin.

Simpson added: "Pre-season is always tough and we've got to accept the fact that we're tired, stiff and sore.

"The games are coming round and we don't want to be running round tracks to get fit, we want to play games and keep gearing up to August 13."
