Workington Reds got back to winning ways last night as they defeated Marine in the second round of the Integro League Cup.

This was a huge boost of confidence for the side who had rung the changes with a busy week ahead of them.

In the absence of Lee Andrews, Gari Rowntree was in charge on the touchline and he was delighted to secure the win.

Two goals from Nathan Waterston were enough to secure Reds passage into the third round where they will now meet Lancaster away from home.

“At least we got the win and that was all we were looking for tonight,” said Rowntree.

“They got on top slightly and I did think it was going to penalties at one point. But we got that crucial second goal and got the win.

“Nathan did very well getting the goals, he has done well all season when he was coming off the bench. He was making an impact and now that he has had his chance, he’s doing great.”

Rowntree also had praise for some of the youngsters who were involved on the night.

“Joe Hetherington did really well when he came on. I asked the older lads to talk to him but he’s a good player and Cam Harker did well as well," Rowntree added.

Reds now have a quick turnaround to their Cumberland Cup tie with Workington Athletic tomorrow night when even more of the younger players will be involved after a couple of players picked up slight niggles against marine.

Reds announced this week that midfielder James Earl had left the club and he has now joined Carlisle City, making his debut in their 4-1 win over Holker Old Boys.

In recent weeks, he hasn’t had much field time and last had a taste of the action in the FA Trophy game at Weston-super-Mare last month.

A Reds statement said they would like to thank James for his service with the club and wish him all the best in the next chapter of his playing career.
