The new midfield partnership between Josh Calvert and Conor Tinnion has given Workington Reds a huge boost, says boss Dave Hewson.

The duo linked-up well during Saturday’s 3-1 win against high-flying Stourbridge after Reds lost several key midfielders through injury and suspension.

And Hewson says they were key to Reds continuing their run of form and collecting vital league points.

“I thought Josh and Conor were absolutely outstanding at the weekend,” said Hewson.

“I think, in the first half, the amount of second balls that they picked up and won, was phenomenal.

“Their work-rate as well – they kept driving us on and they complemented each other well.”

He added that the pair both brought different strengths to the midfield that complemented each other.

“No disrespect to Josh because he is a good football player, but he has that grit, determination and strength in the middle of the park,” explained Hewson.

“And Conor just brought that little bit of extra control and creativity.

“He likes to get the ball down, he likes to pass and thread little balls through and that’s what he did for Sam Joel’s goal.

“It was a great bit of vision and a great ball, so I think they complemented each other well and they were praised in the dressing room.”

Reds are now one place off the play-offs, in sixth, following midweek action elsewhere in the division.

So, they go to Coalville Town on Saturday in search of more points to boost themselves into the top five.

This is one of the longest journeys of the season for Reds, with a 434-mile round trip ahead of them.

They are planning on travelling down tomorrow and staying overnight in preparation for the tough encounter.
