Workington Reds boss Derek Townsley admitted they should have been more clinical against Corby Town despite winning 1-0 on Saturday.

Reds had the majority of possession and created plenty of opportunities but failed to find the back of the net after Scott Allison’s opener.

Corby were restricted to the odd chance on the break but they didn’t have a real shot on goal until the 67th minute.

Townsley said: “It was comfortable in that Aaron Taylor didn’t really have a save to make, or maybe one.

“But we were crying out for that second goal just to give us a little bit of breathing space.

“If there was one criticism today then it would be that we were not clinical enough in front of goal. But I think it would be unfair to them as I think, as a group, they worked their socks off.

"I said I was pleased they got the win and they got the reward for all their effort because I think it would have been cruel if we hadn’t taken the three points.”

Reds moved up to 11th in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier with the win and they had another huge plus with Joe McGee returning from injury.

It was thought it would be the end of the month before McGee was fit but he came on off the bench in the second half on Saturday.

“We had pencilled Joe in for the end of the month but I spoke to him this week and he said he had been given the all clear from the consultant,” explained Townsley.

“That was a bonus for us as we thought we would have been a couple more weeks without him.”

Reds’ game tomorrow night has been called off as opponents Ramsbottom’s FA Trophy tie was off at the weekend and is due to be replayed midweek.

So they now have a full week to prepare for the trip to Ilkeston next Saturday in the league.
