Twelve months after announcing his retirement, a familiar face is back at Workington Reds.

The versatile Phil McLuckie has returned to Borough Park after signing a deal until the end of the season.

Joint managers, David Hewson and Lee Andrews, have moved quickly to plug the gaps in their squad, left by the departing Jake Simpson and injured Jack Egan.

And the Borough Park outfit has announced that McLuckie will be returning to the club with immediate effect.

It is the second signing in a week after promising youngster, Tommy Whitehead, linked up with the first-team squad, making a successful debut at Colne.

Hewson was delighted with the recruitment of a naturally fit, versatile player saying he would soon get back into the swing of things.

He said: "A fit and focused Phil McLuckie would be an asset to any squad in this league and it won’t take him too long before he is up and running and ready for action.

"His working week has changed recently which will allow him to train on a regular basis."

McLuckie has made 279 starts (plus 66 substitute appearances) for Reds since his arrival during the 2007-08 campaign, scoring 30 goals in the process.

He is expected to go straight into the squad for tonight’s Cumberland Cup match against Whitehaven at Borough Park, kick-off 7.30pm.

Having played in a variety of positions during his 10 seasons at Borough Park, McLuckie could fill the vacancy at right-back caused by Simpson’s switch to a non-playing, full-time role on the staff at League Two Chesterfield.

He last played for Reds in October 2016 – the 3-1 home league defeat by Matlock Town, and cited a catalogue of injuries and shift work as the reasons for his decision.
