Workington Reds defender Jake Simpson believes a victory tomorrow will help to reignite his side's stuttering season.

The right-back is likely to figure in his side's plans when they welcome ninth tier Shildon to Borough Park in the competition's second qualifying round.

Reds go into the match on the back of a frustrating midweek draw with Frickley Athletic, which extended their winless run to six games.

Derek Townsley's side won their first qualifying round match 3-0 against Warrington earlier this month to set up the Shildon tie.

Simpson said: "We're very determined to bounce back. The way we dropped points was frustrating.

"We felt the late goal was preventable and we have to put it right on Saturday.

"I know a bit about Shildon from when I played for Celtic Nation. They will be competitive and well organised.

"They will be up for it and have a point to prove. Playing a team from a couple of leagues below will be tough.

"It's a chance for us to get a cup run started and get a bit of confidence and that belief that we can take things to any team we play against."

A win would bring it £4,500 in prize money and a potential tie against a team from either the National League North or South.

Long-term absentees Anthony Wright and Gari Rowntree will miss the game and Kyle May is unavailable.

Reds were knocked out in the second qualifying round last year by National League North outfit Harrogate Town.

Shildon are currently third in the Northern League Division One and boast league experience in the form of Matty Robson, Nick Liversedge and Paul Connor.

Simpson added: "As a spectator, I've got a lot of memories of the FA Cup through my dad.

"But, as a player, I've not had a cup run and this year I hope to put that right.

"It's a massive competition for us to be part of.

"It would be brilliant for the club to make the first round proper when all the Football League clubs come in.

"With any cup match, we know the danger of a one-off game and anything can happen. They will be up for it."

Kick off at Borough Park is at 3pm.
