Former Workington Reds chairman Dale Brotherton has revealed he wants to buy Borough Park.

Mr Brotherton said he is ready to meet with Allerdale Borough Council, which owns the ground, with the aim of tabling a bid.

If successful, he then hopes to give Reds a 100-year lease for a nominal amount.

Mr Brotherton, who was Reds chairman from 2000 to 2006, hopes to ensure its long-term stability with the offer.

Reds are believed to have around 10 years left on their current lease.

Mr Brotherton said: “I haven’t got the time to devote myself to the club, I have too much on with family and business to do any job with the club justice.

"So instead I have put this proposal on the table. I am waiting to hear back from the council leader’s office.

"I want to give the club major stability for the longer term. So I put the proposal to the board.

“I am excited by the proposals and some of the shareholders I have spoken to seemed overwhelmed.”

Mr Brotherton said the outlay would be entirely his.

He said: “There is no outlay to the club and it will give them longevity and stability. And in my opinion, it will make Workington Reds the major sports player in Workington, with no disrespect to anyone else.

Dale Brotherton “They would have total autonomy of the ground. At the end of the day I believe the proposal will be of massive benefit to the club and its shareholders and supporters.

“I know what the supporters and shareholders want and what the focus of the club is all about. This only benefits the club, it is more for them than for me.”

Mr Brotherton added that Borough Park was the right home for Workington Reds.

“I love the club to bits,” he added. “This will help the club and enable them to row their own canoe and do what they want to do with the ground.”

Workington Reds declined to comment at this stage.

An Allerdale council spokesman said: “Mr Brotherton has requested a meeting with the council to discuss Borough Park but no discussions have yet taken place.”
