Elated Workington Reds boss Dave Hewson praised his side as they put on another commanding performance in front of the Borough Park faithful.

Reds defeated Rushall Olympic 4-1 with Scott Allison bagging a brace, Matty Douglas back on the scoresheet again and Nathan Waterston proving a class act late on.

The victory leaves Workington seventh in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League table – and right on the edge of the play-off slots.

“I’ve just got to heap huge amounts of praise on the players and everyone involved for putting in a great shift and turning out a fantastic result and performance,” said Hewson.

“I certainly think we deserved the victory, whether we deserved it by such a great margin I don’t know.

“Rushall worked very hard throughout the game and they will feel a little bit disappointed to have conceded four, but I think that’s just credit to our team’s character and desire and attitude throughout the game.”

Reds bagged the first goal before their visitors hit back to level matters but then hit three goals in the final 15 minutes to put the icing on the cake for Workington and secured them the vital league points.

“I thought we dominated things in the first half and we got our rewards with one goal,” added Hewson.

“I thought we needed to kick on and push for that all-important second one, it didn’t quite come until much later in the second half, later than I would have liked but I am full of praise for the team for such a professional and workmanlike performance.

“At the end of the day, a 4-1 result at home, and another four goals at home, is magnificent.”

Hewson had praise for all of his players across the park but admitted super sub Waterston’s goal near the close was a little special.

“It was absolutely brilliant,” he said.

“He doesn’t want to be known as an impact player but when you have someone with the quality and pace of Nathan to bring on, this is what he can do.

“We asked him to go on and be lively and get in behind and that’s what he has done.

"His first touch was brilliant and then he skipped past one and cut inside another and his finish was just class.

“He has worked ever so hard and has such a good attitude and is so patient.

"Whenever he’s called upon, he does a fantastic job so it was good for him to get on the scoresheet.”
