Defender Jake Simpson insists Workington Reds cannot underestimate Marine tonight after last week's dismal defeat against bottom side Skelmersdale United.

Simpson was disappointed Reds did not have the chance to put last Tuesday's 1-0 loss against Skem right at the weekend as Saturday's game against Halesowen Town was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

But he believes they have learned their lesson ahead of a crucial run of games.

"I think we wanted to put a few things right from the Skelmersdale game and Saturday would have been a good test," he said.

"At the same time, it's given us a chance to regroup.

"If nothing else, the Skelmersdale game showed us that the league table means absolutely nothing when it comes to a one-off match, which is what they all are now up to the end of the season.

"We're making the point in the changing room that that's the way it is."

Simpson said last week's result had not dented confidence in the team's ability and called for application in the final months of the season.

"No disrespect to Skelmersdale but I think the result was more down to our wrongdoings than their performance," he said.

"We've not lost belief in what we've got in that changing room.

"It's one of the strongest squads the club's had for many years.

"When we do apply ourselves, we can go on a run and beat any team in this league.

"It was a wake-up call for a few and maybe we needed it at this stage of the season to show that we can never take out foot off the gas."

Gari Rowntree and Conor Tinnion are suspended for tonight's match and Simpson admitted their return this weekend will be a big boost for the team.

He said: "Conor's goal-scoring record and what he does for the team stands out and Gary is club captain, so they're both big players."
