Workington Reds 2 Rushall Olympic 0

A superb team effort led to Workington Reds recording a 2-0 victory over Evo Stik Northern Premier League leaders Rushall Olympic at Borough Park.

In truth, the margin could have been wider as Reds were in the ascendancy for the majority of the game.

The home side played some great football in the first half and looked in a different class, with Conor Tinnion causing problems across the park.

Rushall did not look like a side at the head of the table and the key for Reds was their defence, who restricted the visitors' opportunities, led by a great performance from Kyle May.

The Pics also spent the majority of the second half with 10 men after Lee Smith was sent off for a two-footed tackle on James Earl.

They did have a resurgence but Reds dealt with it admirably and showed just what they can do when the whole team pulls together.

A header from May put Reds ahead after 35 minutes and Tinnion followed it up with their second two minutes later.

Reds continued to search for an elusive third goal but it did not come despite numerous opportunities but, in the end, the two goals were enough.

There was some early excitement as Reds pushed forward as Tinnion fed a lovely ball through to Jack Ryan who was thwarted twice by the keeper.

The ball came back across to Nathan Waterston but his attempt was wide of the target.

And, in a great opening spell, James Earl lofted in a great ball to meet the head of the on-rushing Scott Allison but his shot went wide as the offside flag was also raised and Rushall got the free-kick.

Reds kept coming as Rob Wilson's cross found the head of Ryan and he nodded it on for Allison, who was marked heavily and the ball went out for a corner.

The corner was initially cleared but it came back out to Wilson. His first attempt was blocked by the amount of bodies in the box but his second forced a good save from Jose Veiga in goal.

Reds had the majority of the possession and chances, restricting their visitors to the odd break, not really troubling Aaran Taylor in goal.

Tinnion pounced on a loose ball and curled a lovely cross in for Waterston who twisted and attempted a shot but it went out for a goal kick.

Then, Allison put the ball into the path of Jake Simpson out on the far side and he put in a lovely cross across the face of the goal but nobody could meet it.

Reds finally got the goal they richly deserved in the 35th minute. They had a free-kick around 20 yards out, which Tinnion floated over the waiting wall.

It was met May at the far post and he flicked it home with a nice header. And that was just the start.

Two minutes later and it was 2-0 when Waterston put the ball in the path of Tinnion who slotted it home neatly.

Another Tinnion free-kick, this time from the sideline, caused more problems for the Rushall defence and Calvert's chip went just over the crossbar.

Tinnion had another shot from an angle as the first half moved into extra time but the whistle went with Reds leading the league leaders 2-0.

Rushall had a great chance after five minutes of the second half had passed when they won a free-kick on the edge of the area. But the ball struck the wall and Reds were able to clear.

Then, moments later, Rushall were down to 10 men as Lee Smith and Earl both slid into a tackle but the referee decided Smith's challenge was dangerous and he was shown a straight red card.

Anthony Wright, on as a sub for Allison, tried his luck as Wilson squared a ball across the goal for him but the keeper collected.

Wright tested the keeper yet again as he curled a shot in from wide out on the left-hand side and Veiga blocked but could not hold on to the ball and it had to be cleared by the defender.

Reds continued to search for an elusive goal to kill the game off completely.

Earl looked to have a golden chance at the far post as Tinnion fed in a great ball, after beating several defenders, but he blasted it over the bar.

Reds had another good chance on the break as the clock ticked down to try and secure the points but Earl was once again wide of the target with the final shot.

Tinnion looked to get in a good position as he danced past three defenders in the box but he blasted it just wide of the post.

And, with five minutes to go, Tinnion had an even better chance as he brought the ball out of his own half and took on the remaining two defenders before firing in a shot which hit the post.

Into the dying seconds of added time and Wilson blasted a shot just across the goal face before the whistle sounded for a well deserved 2-0 win.
