Mason Compton has re-signed for Workington Comets.

The Australian, who is a Workington asset, improved dramatically in the final meetings of last season, with a move to a reserve berth and a change of engine boosting his confidence.

Club owner Laura Morgan believes Campton deserves the chance to take that momentum into the new season and realise his potential after a stop-start Comets career to date.

She said: "It's no secret, and Mason has documented it himself, that he didn't have such a good season.

"It was only in the last month when he actually changed his engine that it started coming together.

"He's a Workington asset, so it wouldn't make good business sense to leave him out of the team."

"He believed for a lot of the season that he was the problem and that he was doing something wrong, only to get this new engine and realise actually, things are different now," Morgan added.

"Based really on that last few weeks, and the fact that he's a Workington asset, we believe it's worth giving the guy another chance."

Morgan admitted Campton had struggled with his confidence last season and said it was something he would need to work on during the winter break.

The 23-year-old's 4.67 average leaves Comets with 24.30 points for their final four riders, with Matt Williamson already returning on 3.58 and Thomas Jorgensen joining on 7.45 last week.

One rider who is out of contention is last season's No5 Claus Vissing, who re-signed for Berwick on Sunday after a year at Derwent Park.
