Workington Comets must target a positive weekend if they are to keep their play-offs chase alive, according to club owner Laura Morgan.

Comets were thrashed at Ipswich on Thursday and resume against Redcar at home tonight (7pm start) before a vital visit to Scunthorpe tomorrow (6.30pm start).

Morgan believes a positive result against both teams is the way to stay in contention for a top six finish.

“It’s almost make-or-break now,” she said.

“Without meaning any disrespect, these are two teams in the bottom quarter of the league and we need points, so I’m fully expecting to get maximum points at home to Redcar.

“Scunthorpe on Sunday, after what happened at Redcar, is a must for getting some away points.

“They haven’t been doing so well so I do think that we can go there and score some points.”

Morgan admitted her team’s struggles on the road have been as frustrating for the promotion and riders as they have for the fans but was quick to defend her side from accusations that they could try harder.

“I know in my heart that’s not true,” she said.

“What everybody has to remember is that this is their bread and butter and not one of my riders goes out there to finish last.

“For all the promotion and supporters are frustrated, it must be so much more frustrating for them.”

Carl Stonehewer Comets will be boosted tonight by the return of legend Carl Stonehewer, who will be visiting his old track to watch Workington take on another of his former sides for the first time in years.

Morgan said: “Carl will be coming back up here after all these years and he’s a great ambassador for Workington speedway.

“He really is Mr Workington and even people who don’t go to speedway, most would recognise his name.”
