Race ace Thomas Jorgensen described his new home track as “awesome” ahead of tonight’s season-opening Cumberland Open Championship (7pm start).

Jorgensen joined Comets in November after successful spells with Scunthorpe and Berwick and was a long-term target for Comets’ promotion.

The Dane, who describes himself as an all-rounder who can gate or pass, hopes to up his average and qualify for the European speedway rounds this season.

He said: “I needed a bit of a change and Workington is a really good club, very professional. From what I’ve heard, the riders get looked after here.

“The track is absolutely awesome and they do everything to make it that way.

“I like big, fast tracks and although people say they are similar, this one is less rough than Berwick.

"I know the guys and it looks pretty strong so we’re going to do well. I’m hoping we can make the top three and even go all the way and win it.”
