Comets’ new boy James Sarjeant is hopeful his team can avoid being caught under Ipswich Witches’ spell, as Workington bid to make it three wins in a row against his former club.

Sarjeant is no stranger to the Witches, having spent most of last season with them and a period as injury cover for Kyle Newman last month.

Ipswich are second in the table and boast current British Champion Danny King in their ranks. But Sarjeant believes Comets can make home advantage count on Saturday and take confidence from humbling league leaders Edinburgh Monarchs at the weekend.

“We’ve got Ipswich on Saturday, which is going to be another tough one, maybe even tougher,” he said.

“I know we’re a few matches behind everyone but hopefully we can start catching up and showing what we can do.

“Everyone knows what Danny King can do but I think as long as we all do our jobs we should be good.

“I know Cameron Heeps has been doing doing well, so we’ve got to watch out for him but we need to be at it from the start while they’re sorting out setups.

“When I was at Ipswich, it would take teams a few rides to get used to the track.

“So I’m hoping it will work the other way for us at Derwent Park with it being so different to their place.”

Sarjeant was drafted in as a hasty replacement for Adam Roynon after Comets dropped the Cumbrian racer earlier this month and has had to hit the ground running.

But he visibly grew in confidence during Sunday night’s stunning win and is happy to be contributing to a Comets team which is starting to turn heads.

“I’m slowly getting there,” he said.

“I’ve had a few problems but we’re starting to straighten them out and it’s good scoring some points.

“I know I drop to reserve soon and that wasn’t really in my plan for this season but hopefully I can bang points in there.

“It didn’t really feel like the start of the season but this last two weeks has been back to normal speedway.

“I’m happy I’m fixed up so I can get my head down now at Workington. I think we’ve got a good team and we can go all the way.

“As long as you make the play-offs, anything can happen.”
